He was drafted by the Colts as the first overall pick in 1998 after a standout college football career with the Tennessee Volunteers. He is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and the older brother of current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Manning stunned many when he chose to attend the University of Tennessee instead of Ole Miss, his father’s alma mater. He became Tennessee’s all-time leading passer with 11,201 yards and 89 touchdowns and won 39 of 45 games as a starter, breaking the Southeastern Conference (SEC) record for career wins. Against Florida, he threw for 326 yards and 2 touchdowns, leading the Vols to a 30-21 halftime lead. in his rookie season, he passed for 3,739 yards with 26 touchdowns, set five different NFL rookie records, including most touchdown passes in a season, and was named to the NFL All-Rookie First Team. The Colts opened the 1999 season with a 31-14 victory over Buffalo, but gave up a 28-7 lead the following week against the Patriots and lost.
